Lyrics for Pauline is a collection of 10 songs written in a period of contemplation and as always with Place’s songwriting, considerable self examination. With elements of blues, roots, experimental folk, ragtime and avant garde, this is a songbook of powerful lyrics some of which probably belong in a private journal. The raw honesty of his songwriting is laid bare with songs such as Abandon and Reclaim, and No More Cocaine, while The Happy Drinker also offers humour and irony to the otherwise sad story of an alcoholic.
